Analysis Team presented three breakout sessions and participated in an expert discussion panel at the Kscope19 conference, June 23 through 27, 2019 in Seattle, WA. Kscope is an annual conference organized by the Oracle Development Tools User Group (ODTUG) that offers educational sessions on technical topics and business cases related to Oracle’s Business Intelligence and Analytics, Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) Suite (Hyperion), Oracle’s Relational Database and Application Express (APEX).
At this year’s Kscope Analysis Team consultants presented or co-presented several sessions related to Oracle Essbase. Analysis Team has significant expertise in Essbase, a market-leading analytic and planning solution used by organizations around the world and available in both cloud and on-prem versions.
Trials and Tribulations
In this session Doug Pearce, Principal Consultant at Analysis Team, and Mihaela Ciota, Sr. Specialist Financial Systems at Abbott Laboratories presented a unique business solution case for Essbase and Applied OLAP’s Dodeca Spreadsheet Management System in the medical technology industry. Abbott leveraged these applications as a powerful platform for modeling clinical trials, replacing two expensive and unscalable systems. The Essbase and Dodeca solution removed administrative bottlenecks, enabling multi-year clinical study programs to be re-forecasted, annotated, compared and reported much faster and more easily than before.
Everything You Need to Know about Essbase Load Rules
Doug Pearce, Principal Consultant at Analysis Team and George Cooper, BI Architect at Gap, Inc. discussed the key features and functionality of Essbase’s Load Rules, an important feature of the analytic platform. Load Rules provide transformation and data loading capabilities for updating Essbase’s Outline (dimension structure) as well as loading numeric data into the database. Doug and George covered features of the Data Prep Editor and presented tips (and traps) associated with loading data and building dimensions in Essbase, including changing member aliases, updating UDAs, advanced record selection/rejection, and more.
Where the Wild Cubes Are
Essbase is most often used for loading General Ledger data to update financial statements, enable input of plans and forecasts, and to create financial variance reports. In this session Martin Neuliep, Client Success Director at Analysis Team and Doug Pearce, Principal Consultant at Analysis Team discussed how Essbase can be used to address other analytic and reporting needs around the organization. Based on solutions implemented for real client organizations, they described how Essbase has been leveraged for monitoring employee health and safety, web traffic analysis, materials costing, product distribution sell-through, aggregating survey results and other purposes.
Essbase Design Architecture Panel
Dave Stark, Analysis Team President and Martin Neuliep, Client Success Director at Analysis Team participated on a panel of highly experienced Essbase solution designers and implementers. The topics discussed by the panel included what is Essbase’s “sweet spot”, the most unusual custom Essbase solutions that worked (or didn’t), the first questions to ask clients at the outset of a new implementation, where the biggest project risks are and how to address them, and the future of multi-dimensional modeling and analytics.
